Sofía Galván Puente has been the Director of Disability Rights International for Mexico & Central America since July, 2010. Previously she worked as a Legal Consultant and Interpreter for Disability Rights International. She is a Mexican lawyer who earned her law degree from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), 2006. She pursued an LL.M., magna cum laude, in International Human Rights Law from the University of Notre Dame – Law School, 2009.
Galván has worked at both organs of the Inter-American Human Rights System: the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR). She was a Visiting Professional at the Court, and a “Rómulo Gallegos” Fellow at the IACHR. She also worked as a Notre Dame Fellow at the American Bar Association Rule of Law Implementation, and collaborated in the Organization of American States’ Electoral Observation Mission in Guatemala as an International Observer.
Likewise, she has worked on issues of International Law, International Criminal Law, Immigration and International Human Rights Law in various settings such as government agencies, universities, legal offices and NGOs. As Subdirector of the Human Rights Unit of the Ministry of Government, she was in charge of vulnerable groups, among them, people with disabilities. In addition, she has been involved in academic responsibilities: participating in moot court competitions, organizing academic events, writing articles for legal journals, giving lectures, and teaching.
